Knowing a cloth face mask does offer a bit of protection to the wearer, but DIY masks’ effectiveness varied widely, according to a study by a group of scientists and doctors at Wake Forest University. The group tested approximately 400 masks made by community volunteers and found two better material options
- a double layer of cotton with a thread count of at least 180
- a double-layer mask with a simple cotton outer layer and an inner layer of flannel
Generally a denser weave of thicker material that light doesn’t pass through should be a good material to use for your diy mask. Be aware to keep a balance between breathability and filtration.
No matter what material you choose, always keep in mind to use masks properly. Wash you hands before putting on mark. When taking off a mask, carefully not to touch your eyes, nose and mouth. Machine wash the masks routinely.
